With frequent activities and events, the collective offers a safe space for feedback, experimentation and a collective learning experience. The pool collective is self-governed by its contributing artists with a flat hierarchy, and defines membership through participation.
In March 2020, a diverse group of young photographers gathered to discuss how the photography scene in Switzerland could be structured more in line with their needs. From the very beginning, the focus was on the process of photographic work and the collective learning.
Since then, this highly active group has been shaped by extensive engagement, abundant creative energy, and the expertise and networks of its members. The group’s identity and activities have always developed internally, without any traditional constraints. The collective is part of the SIYU professional association.
The pool collective organises workshops, feedback sessions, exhibitions and many other types of events and activities. The participatory organisation of activities through its contributors allows for a flexible structure and enables the collective to react quickly to opportunities and challenges as they arise.
The collective has implemented a feedback system, originally developed in KABK, which significantly enhances the quality of feedback. This system goes beyond mere judgement and instead fosters a culture of providing actionable recommendations, resulting in improved outcomes.
The pool collective is deliberately self-organised and builds on flat hierarchies. The collective defines its structure fluidly through participation, with the aim of an active and lively group. For this purpose, the group is divided into three categories:
Subscriber
As someone interested in the pool collective, there is always the possibility of active participation in activities, discussions and organisation. Regular information is provided in an internal newsletter.
Contributor
All those who have actively participated in events over the past two calendar years and presented themselves and their work can call themselves contributors.
Caretaker
Administrative and organisational work is carried out by the Caretakers. They facilitate an active and vibrant group and always act in the group’s best interests. By being Caretakers, they are automatically Contributors.
The prerequisites for being part of the collective is to work on personally motivated projects and an in-depth engagement with the medium of photography. The desire for exchange, feedback and personal development plays a central role. The group is committed to respectful interaction with each other, a lively culture of discussion and rejects any form of discrimination.
